Some 2,237 miles of new power cables are planned in Germany to force the energy turnaround to use alternative sources. The German utilities' industry association BDEW said Monday the solar power output from January through September rose from 16.5 gigawatt hours last year to 25 gigawatt hours in 2012. Germany decided last year to phase out nuclear power by 2022 and replace it with renewable energies.

The Labor Ministry says the number of people registered as unemployed in Spain jumped by 128,242 people in October as the countrys recession showed no signs of easing. The nation's unemployment rate is released separately and quarterly. It stood at 25.02 percent at the end of the third quarter. The jobless rate is 52 percent for those under age 25. Spain, the fourth largest economy among the 17 countries that use the euro, is in its second recession in three years. The banner reads in Spanish: "Stop evictions", "Catalunya Caixa steals, swindling and cheating".
