Nice on the ice

Posted Feb. 20, 2013, at 2:17 p.m.

Anglers had their choice of Hancock County ice-fishing hot spots during Saturday’s MAINEiacs Charities Ice Fishing Derby, but many flocked to Beech Hill Pond in Otis to try their luck. Several anglers congregated at a single shack on the lake with a day’s worth of gear; A distant pair of anglers are framed by a nearby ice fishing flag as they set up their own traps; Bart Currie of Charleston has an attentive audience — Aidan and Taebria Currie — as he sets up some traps to tend; A pair of anglers, Tony Jipson of Bangor (left) and Tommy Tardiff of Holden show off the top two brook trout in the derby. Jipson’s 4.45-pounder took top prize while Tardiff’s 3.85-pounder was second. Both were weighed in at Dunn’s aviation hangar on Beech Hill Pond, but were caught at Lower Springy Pond in Otis.
