Maine’s vanes as fickle as its rains

UNION, Maine — At his age, Malcolm Wadsworth wants nothing to do with climbing on his roof. But that hasn’t prevented the 82-year-old from displaying his latest weather vane, a rifle he made from wood and modeled after his favorite Winchester. He simply pounded a pole in the ground next to his driveway and set his newest wind indicator on top.

“I had a rooster, but it blew down,” said Wadsworth. “I’m too old to climb ladders anymore.”

Roosters and ducks seem to be the most popular weather vanes on barns and garages around Maine – so photographer Robert Bukaty skipped those. Here’s a collection of some of the more interesting weather vanes that caught his eye on recent travels around the state.
