SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — What is going on, and who are these people?

More than a few shoppers were caught off-guard last Saturday morning, wondering if they had stumbled onto an impromptu Halloween parade at the Maine Mall.

No, it was just a bunch of fun-loving geeks who had marched over from the PortConMaine convention at Doubletree Hotel for a fashion show in the mall’s garden court. More than 100 people dressed up as their favorite science-fiction character participated in the event.

The show, which was sponsored by Newbury Comics, one of the mall’s newest tenants, was part of a four-day convention celebrating anime and gaming.
