BANGOR, Maine — Bangor police are investigating a robbery at Maine Savings Federal Credit Union on Broadway, Sgt. Cathy Rumsey confirmed Thursday afternoon.

The robbery happened at 2:30 p.m., when a man entered the credit union and handed a teller a note demanding cash, Rumsey said. No weapon was displayed, she said.

The suspect then fled on foot to the Broadway Shopping Center, Rumsey said. Credit union employees told police that they lost sight of the suspect after he scrambled over a snowbank behind the building.

“At this time, we are looking for a subject who’s described as a white male approximately 5 foot 5. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt with a ballcap underneath. He was wearing blue jeans and black sneakers, according to the employees in the bank,” she said. “His face was concealed. We were told he had some kind of a white cloth over his face.”

The branch was temporarily closed while the investigation continued Thursday afternoon.

A Maine State Police tracking dog traced the suspect’s scent from the credit union to the parking lot near T.J. Maxx, where the track was lost, Rumsey said, adding that police believe the suspect might have gotten into a vehicle.

Assisting Bangor police in addition to state police are personnel from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Rumsey said.

“They were in the area when they heard the radio traffic and offered to assist with scene security and they had a K9 on duty that could help with the tracking,” she said. “Their presence here is obviously an aid to us but should not indicate any additional threats.”

The robbery created a stir on Broadway. Among those who saw the police activity were Aliex Johnston, a Bangor High School senior, and her grandmother Deborah Johnston of Hermon.

The two had been shopping for Aliex’s upcoming cruise when they decided to stop by the Amato’s restaurant next door to the bank and saw a commotion.

“I didn’t even know what was going on until I saw people running and then I was like, ‘What?’ and I looked over,” the teenager said.

Added her grandmother, “I was thinking, ‘I hope they don’t come in here.’”

The nearby Rite Aid pharmacy was robbed last Friday, March 28, by an unknown criminal.

“That case is still under investigation,” Rumsey said.

Rumsey said that there is no evidence as of yet that the two robberies are connected.
