BANGOR, Maine — Thursday night is the official start of the 2014 National Football League season, featuring the Green Bay Packers at the Seattle Seahawks.
In September 1959, the Green Bay Packers played an exhibition game in Bangor against the New York Giants. The game was part of Bangor’s 125th anniversary celebration.
The Bangor game was the Packers’ first under now-legendary head coach Vince Lombardi, who was hired away from the Giants after five years as an assistant coach.
The Giants were favored and won the game 14-0 in front of a crowd of 13,000 people at Garland Street Field.
