WINTER HARBOR, Maine — WERU Community Radio and Schoodic Arts for All will present the new film, “Raw Faith” by Gregory Roscoe, which documents the life of the sailing vessel of the same name, built by a family on the Addison shore to take handicapped children on sailing adventures. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor.
The vessel Raw Faith was the vision of George McKay, who had never been on a sailboat, let alone built one. The 92-foot vessel was made with volunteer labor and without real plans, using meager donated materials and unconventional methods. It was launched in 2003 but suffered a rigging failure and lost its steering on the first test sail and had to be rescued by the Coast Guard. The second sailing attempt did little better and the boat had to be rescued again by the Coast Guard, this time being towed to Rockland Harbor and placed under harbor arrest until it was deemed fit for service. Nevertheless, McKay’s vision drove the project on, even though his family was abandoning the ship. Eventually the boat got a new rig and made its way to Boston before attempting an ill-fated journey to Bermuda.
Many people in the Downeast and Ellsworth areas worked on or watched the boat being built in Addison and have wondered what had become of her since. This 90-minute film follows the life of the boat and the lives of the people close to the project through good and bad times.
The film will be presented by WERU’s “Boat Talk Guys,” Mike Joyce and Alan Sprague, whose program Boat Talk can be heard the second Tuesday of the month and is archived at www.weru.org. Joyce and Sprague talked with MacKay on-air on three different occasions.
The film premiered at the Maine International Film Festival in July with good reviews. It has since had showings in Portland and Brunswick.
The showing of “Raw Faith” is a fundraiser for WERU-FM (89.9 Blue Hill and 99.9 Bangor) and Schoodic Arts for All. Tickets are $10 at the door; free for those 12 years old and under. Hammond Hall is located at 427 Main St. in Winter Harbor, a half-hour drive east of Ellsworth. For more information about the film, visit http://www.rawfaithmovie.com/RawFaith_Movie/Welcome.html.
