On May 1, 2013 WERU Community Radio will celebrate a quarter of a century of broadcasting at 89.9 FM from the top of Blue Hill Mountain on the coast of Maine as an independent, full power, non-commercial, community-run radio station. Since the station’s first broadcast 25 years ago from a converted chicken barn affectionately known as “The Henhouse” (owned by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary fame), WERU has moved to its current location on U.S. Route 1 in East Orland, added the 99.9 FM signal in Bangor, and now broadcasts to more than 240,000 people in seven counties in Mid-Coast, Downeast, and Bangor regions of Maine. Last summer, the station replaced its aging transmitter, the original from 1988, with a new state-of-the-art transmitter purchased through the generous support of the community.
The station is inviting all friends and neighbors to join in their 25th birthday celebration that will go on throughout the year. Leading up to and on the day of Wednesday, May 1 the station will air a number of special broadcasts featuring live musical performances, short features from the station’s early archives, musical retrospectives and visits from guest DJs from “back in the day.” They’ll also be taking on-air calls on May 1st from noon until 4pm and from 6pm until 9pm from listeners who want to wish WERU a happy birthday and share their most vivid memories of WERU.
As part of the 25th birthday celebration, WERU is encouraging listeners to email photos, artwork, warm wishes, poems, and memories about the station to email@example.com. They plan to post as many submissions as possible on the WERU website and/or Facebook page. More events are planned throughout the year to help celebrate the milestone, including WERU’s Annual Open House Party on June 29th with a potluck meal and live music at the station. The year-long celebration is a special thank you to the members and volunteers who have helped sustain the station over the past 25 years.
