Washington County Children’s Chorus to appear at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France

The Washington County Children’s Chorus is participating in the 5PM Vespers Service on Friday, June 27th 2014 at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. According to Robert Getchell, son of Walter and the late Susan Getchell of Marshfield, who is coordinating the WCCChorus’ itinerary in Europe, Notre Dame’s Children’s Choir Director Lionel Sow expects the Washington County youngsters will team up with his young French singers for this opportunity of a lifetime. A place of religious music and worship for some 800 years, Notre Dame is a prime tourist attraction in Paris and a magnificent example of architectural and cultural traditions.

The previous day, June 26th, the WCCChorus is “booked” to participate in the 70th anniversary commemoration of the Martyrs of Dun-les-Places. This small, rural town in the Burgundy Region is the site of the 1944 execution of 27 villagers by German Gestapo and militia. The area was a hotbed of resistance carried out by French groups and British Special Air Service units.

These appearances are part of a ten day trip by some 30 choristers, 4 staff and 25 parents and chaperones. The group plans to stay at a lakeside family resort with modest accommodations and take day trips to various concert and tourist sites. The WCCChorus is a non-profit corporation which charges no fee for participation and is currently raising funds to pay for the Choristers. Parents and chaperones pay their own way.
