Press Release

Walking tour in Bangor June 7

BANGOR, Maine – The Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau and Bangor Museum and History Center have announced that the first walking tour of the season will take place at 5 p.m. Friday, June 7. The Mt. Hope Cemetery Walking Tour will meet at the Superintendent’s Office of the cemetery at 1048 State St. in Bangor.

The Mt. Hope Cemetery Walking Tour will take participants through the second oldest Garden Cemetery in the country, walking along trails while hearing stories about the wealthy lumber barons, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, and many others. The walking tour takes about one hour and is about a mile long.  In addition to the Friday night tour, the Mt. Hope Cemetery Walking Tour is also being offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15.

Another walking tour will make its debut on Tuesday, June 11.  The Devil’s Half-Acre Walking tour begins at 7 p.m. and will bring walkers to the area of “vice and violence that came to be known as the Devil’s Half-Acre.” Walkers will hear the stories of the Madams, prostitutes, lumbermen and sailors during the tour, which takes approximately one hour. This tour will also be offered on Tuesday, June 25, and is recommended for adults only.

Tickets for either tour are $10 for adults, and $5 for children under 12. Tickets can be purchased before the tour on-site, or in advance at Children under 5 and members of the Bangor Museum and History Center can take the tours for free. Participants of either tour should expect the possibility of hilly terrain during the walk.

The tour partnership between the GBCVB and the Bangor Museum was announced earlier in the spring. The Bangor Museum is providing historical content for most of the tours and training guides for all. The GBCVB will coordinate schedules and guides as well as ticket sales.

In addition to two tours starting in June, the Mt. Hope Cemetery Twilight Tour is available beginning Oct. 4, and The Ghostly Bangor Tour is available beginning in October with guided tours on Thursdays and Saturdays. Four bus tours that are about an hour and a half long and feature step-on services for group motor coach tours are also available. The Tommyknockers and More Tour is available beginning July 4. The Best of Bangor Tour, Monument Tour, and Ghostly Bangor are available by advanced ticket purchase only.
