MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will hold its annual Homecoming and Family Weekend from Friday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Sept. 30.
Highlights will include the annual Clipper Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony, athletics alumni games, activities and amusements for kids, a golf tournament, and a performance by the UMM Ukulele Club.
Saturday morning will begin with an open house and free swim at the Aquatics Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children participating in the free swim must have a parent present.
At 1 p.m., the men’s and women’s soccer teams take on Central Maine Community College at the soccer field. Greek Life will sponsor concessions and Clipper Athletics will host half-time activities.
Other events scheduled for Saturday include kids activities on the mall from noon to 4 p.m.; an art exhibit featuring the paintings of Milbridge artist Pat Sharp in the Powers Hall Art Galleries from noon to 4 p.m.; tours of the four-season greenhouse and the recently renovated Portside and Galley departing at 1 p.m. from Kimball Hall; Chemistry Magic with William Otto and Shallee Page at 2 p.m. in the Science Building; and the Green and White Ball at 9:30 p.m. in Kilburn Commons.
Saturday evening, the second annual induction ceremony for the Clipper Athletics Hall of Fame will be held, honoring the athletic achievement of former student-athletes and coaches. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Center and will honor two Hall of Fame inductees: Carroll LaHaye ’76 and Ordman Alley, Sr. ’64.
Alumni games in basketball and soccer will also be held throughout the weekend for former student-athletes. Saturday’s alumni games will include women’s basketball at 6 p.m. and men’s basketball at 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Center. On Sunday, the women’s alumni soccer game will take place at 11 a.m. at the soccer field followed by the men’s game at 1 p.m. Any UMM graduates wishing to play in the alumni games can simply show up to participate.
Appearing on Saturday evening in the Performing Arts Center will be the popular UMM Ukulele Club. The 8 p.m. performance is free and open to all.
On Sunday, the Clipper Athletics Department will hold the Jim Merrill Memorial Downeast Open annual fundraising golf tournament at the Barren View Golf Course in Jonesboro. The event starts at 10 a.m. and the cost is $40 per player. To register for the golf tournament, call Michael May at 255-1290.
