SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Legion Square Market (also known as Smaha’s), on Ocean Street in South Portland, a family business for more than 50 years will continue to operate in that tradition under the new ownership of Alan Cardinal of Scarborough.
Tom Smaha, who has owned and operated Legion Square Market for several decades, searched for a new owner who shared his commitment to the community and the market’s core values. He found the perfect match in Alan Cardinal. A veteran executive with a major supermarket chain, Cardinal assumed ownership on August 1, 2012. Cardinal and his wife, Sylvia Most, will continue to operate the store in the hands-on tradition of a family business.
“Having lived in Southern Maine for decades, it’s great to become the owner of a local market with a stellar reputation for fresh meats with no additives and competitive prices,” Cardinal said. “I’m excited to continue Legion Square Market’s tradition of providing quality products and great service to the local community. The Smaha family’s practices established a trust with customers that will remain unbroken.”
