School Gardens to hold open house events on Saturday, Sept. 28

AUGUSTA, Maine – School gardens around Maine will hold open house events this weekend to showcase their students’ hard work and highlight the many benefits of educational gardening programs.

Participating school systems include Gorham, Bath, Belfast, Islesboro, Falmouth, Ellsworth and Waldoboro. The open-house events are being coordinated through the Maine School Garden Network, according to Kat Coriell, chair of the MSGN board of directors.

“School gardens are one of the best things you can add to a school curriculum,” Coriell said. “They get children outside, exploring nature and science, being active and learning about  healthy foods and good nutrition. Kids will even try broccoli if they grow it themselves.

“We would like all parents, friends and visitors to see the exciting things going on across Maine in our school gardens,” the MSGN official said.

Events will be free and open to the public. Visitors can expect a variety of garden-related activities, including garden tours, gardening demonstrations, games, cider pressing, food tasting and garden-themed artwork.

The Maine School Garden Network is a group of committed individuals who believe in the value of teaching children to garden. MSGN’s mission is to promote and support educational gardening programs in Maine schools.  It holds educational workshops for teachers, maintains a website with resources on gardening, and provides support for school gardening projects.
