SWANVILLE, Maine — Swan Lake State Park, managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, under the Maine Department of Conservation, is holding its fifth annual family celebration 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. If the weather is right, numerous local and statewide visitors will show up to enjoy all the entertainment, children’s activities, a celebrity visit by Smokey Bear and the Shriner Clowns, and picnic food. The event is free with park admisssion.

Park Manager Corie Dimmitt has seen Family Fun Day attendance grow, with more than 700 people visiting last year on event day. Interested people from all over Maine begin to ask about the event as soon as the park opens each spring, the park manager said.

 Swan Lake State Park is a small, yet popular family park located on scenic Swan Lake. Last year, more than 15,000 people visited the park, located south of Bangor.

The park features a swimming area with lifeguard supervision, picnic sites with grills and walking trails. Toilets and changing facilities also are available for use. For large gatherings, a private group shelter can be rented. The park also features a volleyball area and horseshoes pit and a handicapped accessible toilet.

The park is best known “because we have an awesome beach,” Dimmitt said. New this year is the addition of a boat dock, she said.

“It’s great because people can come in now by boat and tie up and picnic,” the park manager said. The park also has added peddle boats, available for rental along with kayaks and canoes, she said. The dock and boat rentals have been a big draw for the public, Dimmitt said.

This year’s Family Fun Day will have many of the same activities as previous years, but one new exhibit will be the Operation Game Thief “Wall of Shame” mobile display. Local Boy Scouts will set up a camp site and share information, and the ever-popular Shriner Clowns will make sure everyone has a good time.

Door-prize donations – “some for adults, some for the kids,” said Dimmitt – have been provided by EBS, Morrill General Store, Perry’s Nut House, Dairy Queen and Jerry’s True Value Hardware. Hunt Hard Guide Service once again has donated two guided hunts.
