SACO, Maine — Saco & Biddeford Savings expects to have a recordbreaking year for its easiest and simplest fundraiser. In 2007, the bank began a Jeans Day program, giving employees the option to pay $1, or more, to wear jeans to work the third Friday of each month. Other occasional special Jeans Days are allowed during the year. All of the proceeds from Jeans Day are donated to a local non-profit selected by employees. By the end of the year, the bank will have raised more than $15,000 for local charities since Jeans Day launched six years ago.
“When the Jeans Day program first started, some customers questioned why bank employees were allowed to wear jeans to work,” said Melissa Boilard, assistant branch manager of the bank’s main office in Saco, in a press release. “But once we explained our philanthropic mission, they thought it was a great idea. Some even offered to donate to the charity as well”, adds Boilard. Each branch now displays a flyer in their lobby that recognizes the cause of the month that will benefit from Jeans Day.
“We are pleased to support our employees with a fun way to give back to the community and allow them to select the charity of their choice,” said Kevin Savage, president of Saco & Biddeford Savings. “Last year, our small efforts allowed us to donate more than $2,000. This year, donations from Jeans Day have continued to grow and are on track to surpass last year’s dollar amount.”
Jeans Day serves as a model for companies that want to lend a hand in their communities, but are unable to sacrifice the manpower of volunteering. This initiative allows employees to choose the non-profits benefiting and to participate without leaving their desks.
