Saco & Biddeford Savings brings relief to food assistance programs

SACO, SOUTH PORTLAND, WESTBROOK and SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution announces that it made a gift of $13,000 this past quarter to local food assistance programs across southern Maine. Representative organizations include: Saco Food Pantry, South Portland Food Cupboard, Westbrook Food Pantry, Scarborough Free Baptist Church; as well as 10 additional sites.

Volumes at food pantries generally drop during the first quarter, since the holidays have passed; though there still remains a need for donations. In addition, with the higher than expected flu outbreak this year, Maine food assistance programs are not only in a frantic need of donations and community food drives, volunteers are needed as well.

Bob Nichols, of the Saco Food Pantry, describes the woes facing hungry Maine families and pantry volunteers, “our pantry alone fed 9,538 people in 2012, an increase of more than 1,200 from the previous year. With more than 40 different food pantries in York County, keeping inventory is a struggle and finding healthy options is like pulling teeth. With the gift cards and cash donations, we’re ordering Easter hams for a few other pantries. We all help each other. When one pantry has more inventory, they share with the community. We’re grateful for cash donations, like those from Saco & Biddeford Savings, it allows us to purchase more or what we need.”

“This is our second year donating to the food assistance programs this first quarter, most companies solicit for donations during the holidays, we learned that the time after the holidays is especially hard since inventories are generally depleted,” said Don Lauzier, Vice President of Community Relations. “We are proud to know that our donation will help build back the inventories especially with the Easter holiday right around the corner.”
