RSU 19 Adult Education Updates – Upcoming Classes and Workshops

Quality of Life Classes

Stone Work Informational Night – Wednesday, March 20 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Come discover a new course that will be starting up in the fall … Wayne King, an experienced stone worker and mason, will talk about what it takes to become a Stone Worker and how to be prepared to embark on a new career. This informational night is at no charge to you.

Raising Chickens – Tuesday, April 9 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Are you considering backyard chickens, but don’t know where to begin? This one-night class is designed to educate and prepare you, as well as answer the common questions of a beginning chicken farmer. Learn basic anatomy, care, handling, maintenance, and habitat, as well as the pitfalls of the endeavor. Come join Doreen and Dan for this enjoyable and informative class. Cost: $10

Investment – Wednesdays, beginning April 10 at 6:00 p.m. Rob Freese will offer a class is designed to cover the basics of investing. Topics will include asset allocation, an explanation of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and alternative assets such as real estate, precious metals, and commodities as well as other related topics. There is no cost to you for attending this class.

Pet Grooming – Thursday, April 25 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Learn the basics of every-day dog grooming with Betsy Newman. A minimum of 10 students is needed to run this class. The cost is $15.

Solar Energy – Saturday, April 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Back by popular demand … Lee Zwicker offers a handyman’s guide to lower your energy footprint and save you money on both your heating and electrical bills. This course is designed for middle and low income home owners who want to save money and help save the planet at the same time. We will cover the construction or purchase of both homemade and commercial solar panels, battery banks, solar hot water heaters, solar hot air systems, solar ovens and solar distillation units. So, if you are interested in saving several hundreds of dollars a year by learning how to build a 30-gallon solar batch hot water heater out of recycled parts for under $100, or maybe a solar heated water trough for cattle that won’t freeze this winter, this is the course for you! (A minimum of 8 students is required.) Cost: $42

Driving Dynamics – Saturday, April 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Maine Driving Dynamics is a Maine sponsored 5-hour defensive driving course that offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. Course includes discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. It is taught by a certified instructor in a format that engages students with lectures, videos, and class discussion/participation. Those completing the course will receive a 3-point credit on their driving record and students 55 and older can receive an insurance discount from their insurer. Best of all, we believe students will be safer drivers and leave the class with a new and unique way of looking at the driving experience. Cost: $40, Senior Citizen (65 and older): $10

High School Completion Classes

The GED is changing! If you started your GED and have not finished, you need to call of office immediately – 368-3290. The GED test will be changing January 2014 and any previous tests not completed by that date will become null and void.

FREE GED Pre-Testing Night — Find out if the GED is right for you … Are you at least 18 years old? Do you need to finish your high school diploma to get a better job? Or do you want to go onto college? Stop by Nokomis on Wednesday, March 27 between 5 and 8 p.m. to take the GED Pre-test at No cost. What do you have to lose? Do you think you’re “too old”? Well, how old are you going to be if you don’t do it?

GED Preparation – After you take the pre-test for the GED, you may need to brush up on some of your studies before taking the final GED tests. You are not alone. We offer classes to prepare you for the final GED tests. The next session of GED classes will be starting up the week of March 19.

Math (Session 2) – Tuesday, March 19 and Wednesdays from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. for 6 weeks.

English – (Session 2) – Thursday, March 21 from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. for 6 weeks.

Career Counseling – Discover all the possibilities available to you right in your own backyard! Are you looking for a new career? Or do you want to go back to college but need some help in sorting through the paperwork? Call to make an appointment with our Career Counselor, Holli Spurlock-Baker, on by appointment by calling 368-3290.

College Classes

Now is the time to start registering for Summer 2013 college classes and get started on your degree through the University of Maine System! Registration begins March 27. Many of these classes are offered right in Newport which can save you time and travel costs. Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Are you expected to create visual displays for your workplace? Do you feel comfortable with this procedure? Would you like to learn some new techniques to get your point across? Then this class is for you! Beginning on Monday, March 25 from 6 until 8:00 p.m. will give you an opportunity to experiment with PowerPoint. This workshop costs $39 … senior citizens may take this class for $20.

Microsoft Excel 2010 – From basic budgets to student grades, learn how this spreadsheet program can organize and help you manage volumes of information for your personal use, occupation, or business. Calculations, shortcuts, merges, sorting, and more will be explored and used in examples you can immediately put into action! Beginning on Monday, April 1 from 6 until 8:00 p.m., this workshop costs $39 … senior citizens may take this class for $20.

Facebook, Twitter and Social Networks – Do you feel like you’re missing out? Learn how to sign up for a free Facebook account, create your profile page and safely navigate to stay in touch with family and friends. If you have an email address please you’re your user name and password available for this course. We will also explore Twitter and other social networks to keep you “in the loop” beginning on Monday, April 22 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. This cost is $39 … senior citizens cost is $20.

Are you looking for a specific class in our program that you cannot find? Visit and search the hundreds of courses offered in 6-week increments. A full description of the course with a detailed syllabus is available on this site. Many residents of our district have already taken various computer applications, digital photography, grant writing and foreign language classes online. They like the convenience of studying at home at a time that works best for them. If you have additional questions, call our office at 368-3290 and we will walk you through the process.

Quincy Market Bus Trip

Saturday, April 27

Travel to historic Quincy Market in Boston for a day of fun! The Quincy Market complex contains dozens of restaurants and shops. Several attractions are a short walk from Quincy Market including the New England Aquarium, The Old State House, and Paul Revere’s House. The fee includes roundtrip motor coach transportation only.

The bus will depart from the Walmart parking lot in Palmyra at 6:30 am and arrive in Boston around 11:00 am. We will depart from Boston promptly at 5:00 pm and arrive back in Palmyra at approximately 9:30 pm.

Participants must be 18 or older. Seats must be purchased by Thursday, April 11th. No refunds will be issued after April 11th.

North Conway, NH

Bus Trip

Saturday, May 18

Enjoy a fun day of shopping at the Settler’s Green Outlet Village in North Conway, New Hampshire, located in Mount Washington Valley in the beautiful White Mountains. Visitors can shop at the many outlet stores, visit art galleries, see a play at one of the area playhouses, take a scenic train ride, and enjoy the cuisine of some of the many restaurants and cafes. The fee includes roundtrip motor coach transportation only.

The bus will depart from the Walmart parking lot in Palmyra at 6:30 am and arrive in North Conway at around 11:00 am. We will depart from North Conway promptly at 5:00 pm and arrive back in Palmyra at about 9:30 pm.

Participants must be 18 or older. Seats must be purchased by Thursday, May 2. No refunds will be issued after May 2.
