PORTLAND, Maine – This October 13th, Classic Album Sundays is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the release of Electric Ladyland with sessions in London, New York City, Glasgow and Portland, Maine. Presented locally by Dispatch Magazine at the newly reopened Empire, CAS is an all-vinyl listening party on a world-class, hi-fidelity stereo system.
For Hendrix fans, this is a chance to delve deep into a truly groundbreaking album and hear it like never before! First, we will listen to music that either inspired or was relevant to the LP, such as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan, followed by a presentation by master guitarist and Jimi Hendrix expert, Bob Thompson of Hearstudios in Camden.
In addition to his experience as a professor, author, and music industry professional, Thompson has taught entire classes devoted to Hendrix’s guitar tone, style, and recording techniques. Thompson will guide the audience through his curated lead-up playlist, followed by listening pointers and poignant anecdotes about the making of the album.
After this dynamic show-and-tell, the lights go down, the volume goes up and we play the vinyl from beginning to end on our audiophile-grade hi-fi. And don’t worry, since it’s a 75-minute LP, we will take a bathroom break between sides B & C.
Food/Drink will be available from Empire’s Chinese Kitchen, which is an experience in itself. Hi-fi system provided by Bowers and Wilkins, with cables from Maine’s own Transparent Audio in Saco.
