Popular Girls Conference Comes to Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — On Saturday, April 27, Hardy Girls Healthy Women will host its popular Girls Unlimited Conference in Portland for the first time ever as part of their efforts to expand programming to southern Maine.

The Girls Unlimited Conference, which sold out in record time when Hardy Girls Healthy Women hosted it in Waterville two weeks ago, is developed and delivered by high school girls, for girls in fourth-eighth grades.

The theme of the conference is girls’ leadership and activism and presenters will cover topics including media literacy and pop culture, body image, financial literacy, and global girl issues.

“The Girls Unlimited Conference is one of the only times each year that girls in Maine can come together, experience a safe space, meet girls from other schools, and learn about issues that they’ve told us are important in their lives,” says Hardy Girls’ Vice President of Programs, Jackie Dupont, who organizes the conference. “The feedback we get from girls who attend this conference is that it changes their lives, they learn to look at and support other girls differently, and they walk away feeling like leaders and activists.”

Organizers expect that more than 100 girls will register for the conference, which will be hosted at the Wishcamper Building at the University of Southern Maine Portland campus from 9:00am – 2:00pm on April 27th.

Hardy Girls Healthy Women launched in-school programming in four middle schools last year, including King Middle School, Cape Elizabeth Middle School, Breakwater School, and Westbrook Middle School. The organization also recently co-hosted a gender and pop culture film series at the Portland Public Library in partnership with Portland-based non-profit, Boys to Men.

The cost to register is $20 before April 22nd and $25 after. Registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, a t-shirt, and takeaways. Scholarships are available. The Girls Unlimited Conference is sponsored by The Bank of Maine, Unum, and Maddy Corson.
