BANGOR, Maine — In a struggling economy many families are challenged to meet the basic needs for food and shelter. Getting children ready for a new school year creates additional financial pressure. For ten years Penquis has joined efforts with business, media and community partners to provide help to families that need assistance getting their children ready for school. One parent stated, “It is hard to send your kids back to school without a backpack or supplies because you needed the money to buy food to feed your family.”
Penquis, Blueberry Broadcasting stations (Kiss 94.5, The Bear, and WTOS) along with participating Dunkin’ Donuts have joined efforts once again to launch the Tools for School Backpack Drive. This year the goal of the Tools for School Drive is to raise 1,000 backpacks to ensure that all students K-12 in the Penquis’ service area have a backpack for the upcoming school year.
Individuals or businesses that would like to participate can donate at the Penquis website www.penquis.org, contribute through one of the “Tools for School” donation boxes located at participating Dunkin Donuts, or drop off a donation at the Penquis office located at 262 Harlow St. in Bangor, or at Blueberry Broadcasting. Both monetary donations and gifts of backpacks are accepted. Larger backpacks are especially needed for 7-12th grade students to accommodate all the books and supplies they carry. Many female students may prefer to carry a tote bag instead of a backpack and those are welcomed donations too.
Families in need of a backpack for their child/children can register online at www.penquis.org by selecting the Register Here for Back to School Supplies button. Registrations will be accepted until August 9th. If families do not have the ability to register online they can call Penquis at 973-3500 or 1-800-215-4942 to be registered.
