Opera Preview: Giulio Cesare at the Grand in Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH, Maine — George Frideric Handel’s Giulio Cesare comes to the Grand in Ellsworth on Saturday, April 27th, by live simulcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. To help music lovers prepare for this event, the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and Friends of the Blue Hill Public Library will join together to introduce and study this fictional account of the alliance between Cleopatra and Julius Cesar at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 26th, at the Blue Hill Public Library.

Known as the “opera that conquered London in Handel’s time,” Giulio Cesare comes to the Met in David McVicar’s lively production. The world’s leading countertenor, David Daniels, sings the title role opposite Natalie Dessay as an irresistibly exotic Cleopatra. Baroque specialist Harry Bickman conducts.

Local opera enthusiasts Linda Lesko and David Porter will summarize the plot, introduce the music and offer some ideas of special ways to enjoy the Saturday simulcast. All are welcome, no previous opera knowledge is needed, and admission is free. For more information, call the library at 374-5515.
