STOCKTON SPRINGS. Maine — Of Thee I Sing, a free patriotic community concert to benefit the Stockton Springs Community Church Steeple Fund, will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at the church.
Organizers said The Steeple Project currently is funded up to the bell section with only the spire section remaining. The cost of that section is $38,000.
Concert musicians performing in the program are all residents of Stockton Springs. Shawn Smith, trumpet, will be accompanied on the historic 1847 E. and G. G. Hook organ by Lorna Russell. Lorna and her husband, Carlton, will play an organ duet.Diana Brookes Brown and Karen Hawthorne will play a flute duet accompanied by Martin Gottlieb on the piano. Each flutist also will play a solo; Diana’s will be classical, and Karen’s will be jazz. Martin also will accompany mezzo-soprano Mary Ann Whaley.
Soprano Bonita Brooks will offer “Songs of Inspiration and Hope,” a medley of pieces from musical theater. A Gospel medley will be presented by the Steeple Singers — Diana Brown, Ronda Nichols, Linda DeGroft, Lorna Russell, Douglas Crosby, Douglas Coffin, Carlton Russell and Pastor Steve DeGroft. Singer and songwriter George Skala will perform a set entitled “Americana.”
During the program the audience will be invited to participate in the singing of “My country ‘tis of thee,” “America, The Beautiful” and, as a finale, the National Anthem.
On July 17th, the ornate and the bell sections of the steeple will be lifted into place.
