MACHIAS, Maine — Music by Mark DeVoto, Robb Cook, Jane Hinson and Gene Nichols will entertain the community, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Centre Street Church in Machias.
All of the program’s music will demonstrate the church’s 1867 mechanical-action organ. Musicologist DeVoto will play Bach’s arrangement of a Vivaldi violin concerto. Cook, who is organist at Centre Street, will play a variety of pop music, aided by Nichols on ukulele and Hinson on piano.
The antique organ was built in Cambridge, Mass. by the highly respected builder George Stevens. It was originally installed in the back of the church, but was moved to an alcove in the front. David Wallace, of Gorham, Maine, recently completed restoration of the instrument.
Until the installation of an electric blower, wind for the organ was provided by an assistant using a wooden hand pump. The instrument has 18 sets of pipes. The hand-carved case is in the style of Gothic revival.
Donations at the door will benefit the organ fund.
