SEARSPORT, Maine — Sardine canneries and the Downeast towns of Eastport and Lubec have been linked since 1876. For four generations the Peacock family operated sardine factories in that region and in Portland. This fall the Penobscot Marine Museum received a call from Robert and Jeanne Peacock, who were interested in donating their family and business papers to the museum archives.
The collection that arrived at the museum is a treasure trove of photographs of the sardine canneries and fishing vessels, business records, periodicals and historic records of the sardine industry, Eastport customhouse records and local history, said a museum spokesperson.
Researchers may access the collection at at the museum’s Stephen Phillips Memorial Library by making an appointment with the collections manager by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 207-548-2529, ext. 212.
