The Maine School Nurse Association (MASN) is proud to honor Barbara Parent of Winterport, as the recipient of the School Nurse of the Year. This award acknowledges a member of MASN who demonstrates excellence in school nursing practice and leadership. Barbara has been a school nurse at Hampden Academy in MSAD 22 for 18 years. Principal Ruey Yehle writes” I have absolute faith that Barbara Parent will always make ethical decisions with the student’s best interest in mind.” “She brings to this role all the qualities that make a great school nurse: passion for her vocation, clear communications skills, and commitment to providing quality services to all students. Barbara was instrumental in the districts decision to increase nursing bringing nurse to student ratios from 1:1200 to the present 1:750. She serves on numerous committees and has been a major influence in the development of the school wellness and nutrition policies, giving better control over high calorie, high fat foods as well as food containing potential allergens in the classroom. Barbabra was honored at the MASN Fall Institute at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport. She will be honored again, in May, at the Blaine House School Nurse Tea where friends and colleagues will be present to celebrate.
