Maine Motorcyclists encouraged to ‘go pink’ before winter

PORTLAND, Maine – Maine motorcyclists are encouraged to think pink and reserve a new Maine breast cancer specialty license plate in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and before they put their bikes away for the season.

It’s crunch time for this exciting effort to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and support through the creation of a Maine Breast Cancer specialty license plate for motorcycles – the first ever motorcycle specialty plate in Maine.Five hundred registrations for the new plates are needed by the time the Maine State Legislature reconvenes in January 2014.

The driving force behind the plates, breast cancer survivor and advocate Meredith Strang Burgess, said in order for the specialty plates to become a reality next year, 500 reservations and funds need to be in hand within the next few months.

“To gain approval from the State to produce the new plates, there is a formal legislative process that we must go through which includes needing to obtain reservations from 500 individuals along with a payment of $25, which will guarantee them a plate when they become available,” she said.

On-line registrations for the Maine Breast Cancer specialty license plate for motorcycles can be made on-line atwww.mainecancer.org/motorcycle.

Strang Burgess who was also the creator of the Maine Breast Cancer specialty plate for automobiles that since 2008 has over 20,000 plates on the road and raised over $550,000 for breast cancer research and support, said when the motor cycle specialty plate becomes a reality, all the proceeds from the effort will stay 100 % in Maine, and will be split equally between three organizations:

A specialty plate costs $25 in addition to the regular motorcycle registration fee. Renewal of the plates will cost $15 annually with the cost added to the regular registration fee

Strang Burgess said on-line registrations for the Maine Breast Cancer specialty license plate for motorcycles can be made on-line atwww.mainecancer.org/motorcycle.
