Maine Innkeepers Foundation awards 11 Maine students scholarships at Tees & Textbooks event

FREEPORT, Maine — The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association, presented 11 Maine students with hospitality scholarships at its ninth annual Tees & Textbooks gala dinner on June 3 in Portland, said Greg Dugal, association executive director.

The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation scholarships are designed to inspire and offer partial support to Maine students pursuing hospitality careers. 260 students have been awarded over $168,800 since the scholarship program began in 1984.

Receiving sponsored scholarships totaling $11,000 were:

• Malcolm Legloahec of Portland, a student Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, received the Charles Samelson Award of $1,500, sponsored by Dirigo Stitching and Harry Samelson.

• Laura Brown of West Poland, a student at Husson University in Bangor, received the Ed Langlois Award of $500, sponsored by Sebasco Harbor Resort.

• Belinda Place of Morrill, a student at Thomas College in Waterville,  was selected for the Women in Hospitality scholarship of $3,000 award, sponsored by Nancy Gray of Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maureen McQuade of the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Kathryn Weare of the Cliff House in Ogunquit, Jean Ginn Marvin of the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, Marian Burns of the Mira Monte Inn and Suites in Bar Harbor and Darlene Ratte of the Best Western Waterville.

• Olivia Penney of Rockport, a student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, accepted the Maine Innkeepers Memorial Award of $1,000, sponsored by Giri Hotel Family.

• Joshua Ouellette of Sanford, at student at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, received the Jedediah Scott Award of $1,000, sponsored by Peter Daigle of Lafayette Hotels.

• Kathryn Asalone of Hampden, a student at the University of Maine, accepted the Dennis Johnston Award of $500, sponsored by Colonial Surveying.

• Elizabeth Sargent of Trenton, a student at the University of Maine Farmington, received the John “Jack” Gibbons Award of $500, sponsored by Fisherman’s Wharf.

• Shyann Gauthier of Appleton, a student at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H., received the Harold Nelson and Irving Small Award of $500, sponsored by Nelson & Small Inc.

• Aaron Richardson of Bangor a student at Husson University in Bangor, accepted the Ed and Fay Carpenter Award of $1,000 Award, sponsored by friends and family members and Carrabasset Coffee.

• Lee Kitchen of Rockport, who attends the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vt., won the Marcel LaCasse Award of $500, sponsored by Joe Van Why.

• Amber Davis of Bangor, a student at Husson University in  Bangor, received the Charlie Keegan Award of $1,000 Award, sponsored by Migis Hotel Group.

Maine Innkeeper Education Foundation Scholarships are awarded after review by a selection committee who consider scholastic records, financial need, extracurricular activities and a desire to work in hospitality to Maine students enrolled at fully accredited schools with specialties in culinary arts or hotel administration. This includes hospitality schools in the state university system, private universities or colleges, and Maine Community College Systems. Non- hospitality awards may also be available to employees and their families or family members of innkeepers.
