Thirteen Maine high school racewalkers made their way this week to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the New Balance one mile Championship high school racewalk competition. Eight Maine boys and five Maine girls competed against racewalkers from South Texas, New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland. Racewalkers from Lisbon High School, Spruce Mountain High School, Edward Little High Sschool, Messalonskee High School, Thornton Academy, Dexter Regional High School, Biddeford High School, Gorham High School, Lake Region High School and Windham High School toed the line, and raced to national prominence.
In the boys race, Tyler Bard of the Lisbon Track Club placed first with a time of 7:16.78, followed by Spencer Dunn of Edward Little, 7:28.12, in second place, Benjamin Kates of Lisbon Track Club, 7:38.68, in fourth place, and Peter Littlefield of Messalonskee in sixth place.
The top six finishers earned New Balance All-American Track and Field athlete awards. Spencer Dunn earned a similar award in March of 2013 at the New Balance Indoor track and field championship one-mile race.
Also making an excellent showing in the boys race was Samuel Brenner of Spruce Mountain in seventh place, 8:05.74, Ian Marshall of Thornton Academy in eighth place, 8:28.02, Tony Martel of the Biddeford Track Club in ninth place, 8:30.05, and Richard Ryckman ofDexter Regional in 10th place, 8:31.23.
Based on this meet the eight Maine boys are ranked 1,2,4,6,7,8,9,and 10 in the U.S. for the one-mile racewalk.
In the girls race, Laura Turner of the Gorham Track Club finished in eighth place ,8:09.94, Kayla Gray of Lake Region High School was 15th, 8:33.17, Kelsey Mitchell, of Gorham Track Club was 22nd, 8:49.34, Olivia Bulgin of Lisbon Track Club, was 25th, 8:56.84, and CiAnne Plummer of the Windham Track Club was 29th in 9:02.64. Laura Turner was just two places out of all-American contention. The Maine girls are ranked nationally at the position they placed in the meet.
