Inaugural Portland Kitchen Tour set for Mother’s Day weekend

PORTLAND, Maine — The inaugural Portland Kitchen Tour is set for Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, just in advance of Mother’s Day.

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour six of the most intriguing private kitchens on the Portland peninsula, including one each in Back Cove and the West End, plus four located in the East End. Each kitchen will feature a chef, cookbook author, cooking demo and/or tasting from some of Maine’s most esteemed culinary geniuses.

“Grab a girlfriend, or your mom, and browse gorgeous granite countertops, drool over double ovens, and covet snazzy cabinets in unexpected colors,” said Marcy Boynton, who conceived and planned the event, along with Lana Wescott.

Boynton notes that one participating kitchen has been gutted and totally renovated and now features loft-style living with views of Casco Bay; it is described by the architect as a “functional urban contemporary style.”

Another kitchen is within the former First Payson Park Evangelical Free Church in Back Cove, and has been converted into a beautiful private residence, with a fabulous kitchen. Often, passersby are so intrigued by the building that they knock on the door and ask for a tour — this is their chance to gain access.

Details of the remaining kitchens are being kept under wraps. “All kitchens have their own unique stories and are sure to inspire,” notes Wescott. Docents will be available at each location to welcome guests, stamp their admission book and share interesting stories about each property.

Those offering samples at each location include All Whipped Up!, A Little Somethin’ Sweet, Girl Gone Raw, Kitchen and Cork, CVC, Baxter Brewing and Black Dinah Chocolatiers. Many will be offering cooking demonstrations and/or cookbook sales and autographs as well.

Additionally, three affiliated businesses at 330-336 Forest Avenue will be participating in the festivities. Kitchen Cove Cabinetry & Design, Eco Home Studio and Distinctive Tile & Design will have their showrooms open and will offer samples and giveaways throughout the event.

The self-guided tour is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, from 10am to 4pm both days. Attendees can spend one morning or the full two days, whichever they prefer, traveling from location to location. Tickets and itinerary guidebooks are available at the tour’s first stop: St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress Street in Portland.

Reserve online for $25 at www.portlandkitchentour.com, or purchase at the door for $30. A portion of sales benefit St. Lawrence Arts Center.

Event sponsors are Down East, Kitchen Cove Cabinetry & Design, Eco Home Studio and Distinctive Tile & Design.
