HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Community Arts Center board of directors recently hired its first employee, Kristen Wells, to serve as managing director of the center. Daughter of Arthur and Mim Sloat of Hodgdon, Wells recently came back to the area from Windham with her husband, David, and their three young daughters.
Wells is a graduate of University of Southern Maine and received a master’s certification in arts administration from Boston University. Most recently, she was the director of development at Catholic Charities Maine.
Houlton Community Arts Center has been a volunteer organization since it began in 2002. Through the generosity of the community, more than $1.2 million dollars was raised to support the renovation of the auditorium, cafeteria, and auditorium entrance of Houlton High School, completing the first of a two-phase plan.
Phase II includes a 13,000 square foot addition designed to deal with a number of issues that currently challenge the music and arts department and limit the potential of the existing space: overcrowding, noise pollution, and storage. The new addition will provide separate rehearsal spaces for vocal and instrumental music classes, a theater and dance classroom, and a visual arts classroom.
The Houlton Community Arts Center works in conjunction with Houlton High School and community groups to provide a venue to benefit arts and culture in the community.
