Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust plans two hikes

ORLAND, Maine – - Saturdays in July and August, Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust President Sarah LeVine will lead a hike in the 4,500-acre Great Pond Mountain Wildlands, meeting at the Wildlands’ South Gate on Route 1 at 10 a.m. Longer hikes of more than 4 miles will alternate weekly with short hikes of 2 miles. The next two hikes are: Short hike on Hothole Brook Trail to the summit of Bump Hill on July 27 that includes a walk across Hothole Brook Bridge, past a huge boulder with a big tree on it and a scramble up a glacial boulder pile to the top where you can see Gread Pond Mountain; and longer hike on Aug. 3 on the new Birches Path to Flying Moose Mountain with a detour to the Forgotten Forest which is timberland untouched by the 1990s harvests.
