STONINGTON, Maine — Penobscot East Resource Center announced on Oct. 4 the launch of a new component to its website, www.penobscoteast.org. The New England Fisheries Access Network at www.fisheriesaccessnetwork.org is designed to connect buyers and sellers of entry-level permits to catch groundfish, like cod, haddock and flounders.
A project of Penobscot East, the New Entrants Program seeks to find pathways for successful entry into the groundfish fishery by small-scale, community based fishermen.
The newly formed website is for fishermen who hold permits and are considering selling, and for those who are seeking access into the fishery. There are separate applications for buyers and sellers. Fishermen can apply online, or download and print the application and mail it to Penobscot East.
The program is funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and is free to fishermen. For information, call Patrick Shepard, Penobscot East fisheries policy associate, at 207-367-2708.
