Washington, DC – U.S. Sen. Susan Collins recently announced that Penobscot County has received a federal grant of $20,000 and Aroostook County received $10,000 to combat hunger and homelessness and to help families in economic crisis.
Senator Collins worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Penobscot and Aroostook Counties to secure this additional funding to previously announced dollars. The grant program is run by FEMA. Sen. Collins is Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee which has jurisdiction over FEMA.
The dollars will help fund shelters and food distribution through food pantries and soup kitchens to provide emergency food for hungry people, many of whom are working families and seniors who must put paying for fuel and medication before food.
