MILBRIDGE, Maine – The Women’s Health Resource Library has announced the 2013 recipients of the Elaine Hill Memorial Nursing Scholarships.
Lauren Ramsay, a recent Narraguagus High School graduate, has been awarded $2500 toward her nursing education. Lauren has been accepted into the nursing program at St. Joseph College of Maine. She plans to become a trauma nurse.
While at Narraguagus, Lauren was a member of the National Honor Society, served on the student council and was class president for four years. She was Salutatorian of her graduating class. Lauren plans to work as a nurses aid while in college as a means of helping with tuition costs as well as gaining experience in the medical field.
The non-traditional student award of $2500 goes to Nettie-Kate Jordan of Machias. Nettie-Kate is a 2000 graduate of Machias Memorial High School, where she was class Valedictorian. She has a liberal arts degree from Bowdoin College.
For the past six years, she has been employed by Down East Community Hospital as a ward clerk. During her years at DECH, Nettie-Kate learned more about the role of the nurse and became inspired to return to school. She is currently enrolled at the University of Maine Fort Kent. After completing her BSN, she plans to return to rural hospital nursing with an ultimate goal of becoming a nurse-practitioner.
The Women’s Health Resource Library established the scholarships in 2009 following the death of nurse Elaine Hill. Elaine dedicated over 30 years to the Milbridge Medical Center and the community. She is remembered for her gentleness, her kindness, and her dry wit.
Funds for the scholarships come from the annual Elaine Hill Walk. The 2013 Elaine Hill Memorial Walk/5K Run is scheduled for Saturday October 19. Visit www.whrl.org for registration information.
