ELLSWORTH, Maine — Eastern Maine Community College will offer its Early Childhood Education degree at the Hancock County Higher Education Center as part of Bring College to ME. The Bring College to ME initiative brings complete degree programs to Maine communities in an effort to increase access to higher education and build a skilled workforce.
The associate degree program offers the theoretical foundation and practical learning experiences for success in a wide variety of occupations dealing with young children from birth through age 8, including those children with special developmental and learning needs. Students can take advantage of articulation agreements that EMCC has with other colleges and universities and use this degree as a pathway to earn a bachelor’s degree in a pre-K–3 teaching certification program or other child and family service occupations.
Eastern Maine Community College anticipates hiring a full-time faculty member for this program expansion effort in Ellsworth. Availability of the ECE program in Ellsworth means students can complete their associate degree in its entirety at the Ellsworth Center and then continue on in baccalaureate level certification programs available at the center or at college campuses throughout Maine.
Students interested in applying or who would like to register for an early childhood education course can call the Hancock County Higher Education Center for an advising appointment, 667-3897. Classes begin Aug. 26. For a complete listing of courses offered by Eastern Maine Community College at the center go to: www.learn.maine.edu/ellsworth
