VASSALBORO, Maine – The Maine Wood Products Association presented the 2012 Pine Tree Award to Duratherm Window Corporation of Vassalboro, at a banquet in Winslow.
The award is presented each year to a Maine-based wood products manufacturing company that has taken innovative steps in the past two years to strengthen their business.
Duratherm, a manufacturer of finely crafted custom wood windows and doors for commercial, residential and institutional buildings. The company was chosen for the Pine Tree Award because of the work they have done in areas including manufacturing efficiency, use of technology, energy savings and employee health programs that have allowed them to keep the locally owned manufacturer operating and growing despite the upheaval in the housing and building markets over the last decade.
In addition to their work to create a more efficient manufacturing process, Duratherm has also been recognized for their employee health initiatives, For years Duratherm has paid, in full, for employee health insurance coverage. Despite dramatic increases in both health care and insurance premium costs, it has continued to do so. In fact, over the course of the past few years Duratherm has strengthened its health offerings by contracting with Maine General Health for an Employee Assistance Program, and introducing and generously funding employee Health Savings Accounts.
Duratherm has been long recognized as a terrific asset to the local community; over the past six years the company has made over $50,000 in direct cash contributions to numerous Maine organization including Maine Special Olympics, the Vassalboro Fire Department, the Kora Shrine Circus, Thomas College, the Central Maine Shrine Club, and Winslow’s 4th of July celebration to name just a few.
The award was officially presented to Downing by Carlisle McLean, General Counsel and Senior Natural Resources Policy Adviser to Governor Paul LePage. Also on hand at the event was State Senator Roger Katz, who presented Duratherm with a State flag on behalf of the Maine Legislature honoring the company for their achievement.
