Community Connections dinner on Feb. 19 to aid Coastal Opportunities

CAMDEN, Maine — Cappy’s Chowder House and Harbor View, continuing the Community Connections fundraisers begun last year by Graffam’s, will shine the spotlight on Coastal Opportunities 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, when Cappy’s will donate up to half of food sales spent by restaurant patrons.

Over the past 43 years, Coastal Opportunities (formerly Coastal Workshop) has served the population of developmentally disabled adults in the Knox County area and is among the strongest such programs statewide. To maintain a high level of services, Coastal Opportunities relies on community support.

Almost everyone is familiar with the Coastal Redemption Center on Limerock Street in Camden, but the Corcoran Center, located behind it, is a hive of activity with a day program that prepares clients to become participating members in the social and economic community. The Coastal Opportunities environment challenges participants, offering opportunities for success and healthy self-esteem.

Sixty-five adults (supported by 90 full- and part-time staff members) now are involved in a wide variety of day and residential programs under the Coastal Opportunities umbrella. Individuals create lovely woven purses and bags on eight large looms, carve unique walking sticks sold to benefit the outdoors program, work at the Coastal Redemption Center and other locations, and volunteer their services for Meals on Wheels, the Owls Head Transportation Museum, Windward Gardens, P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center, the Knox Center, Tanglewood, Camden Food Pantry, and many other local organizations.

Coastal Opportunities also operates eight homes in Camden, Rockport, Rockland, Thomaston, Hope, and Owls Head. For more information, see www.coastalopportunities.org.

Dine at Cappy’s on February 19 and support Coastal Opportunities!
