Beekeeping in Hancock County, ag policy study kickoff

ELLSWORTH, Maine — The Downeast League of Women Voters will kick off a yearlong study of agricultural policy with dinner and a program on beekeeping at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, July 10, at the Bangkok Restaurant in Ellsworth. Tim McCormick of Ellsworth will be the guest speaker. Tim tends a number of hives here in Hancock County and is actively involved with a number of local beekeeper organizations. He will talk about beekeeping, the current plight of bees, and bees, agriculture and the environment. The Downeast League is joining the national League of Women Voters in this study in order to update the League’s position on agricultural policy. This nationwide effort will study technology issues such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), herbicides, pesticides, agricultural water pollution, aquifer depletion, antibiotics in livestock, and accurate food labeling. This study will also cover agricultural finance issues, including consolidation, crop subsidies, and the federal regulatory process. Meetings and events for the general public are planned over the course of the next several months, culminating in a consensus meeting in March of 2014. The general public is invited to attend this meeting to become better informed and to get involved with the League’s study. The League is well known for acting on its policy positions by advocating for change locally as well on the state and national level. Please RSVP by contacting Martha at 667-5963 or marthad@gwi.net, as seating is limited.
