Bangor Theological Seminary Celebrates Historic Graduation

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Theological Seminary  will hold its 194th commencement exercises at 2 p.m.  Saturday, June 22, in the Gracie Theatre at Husson University. The ceremony marks the end of one era and the beginning of a new one as the seminary presents diplomas to 47 students, who make up the final senior class for BTS as a degree-granting institution. Bangor Theological Seminary has served as a center for theological education since 1814, and has been a source of preparation and support for church leaders, particularly those serving rural congregations in northern New England.

“Clearly, a sense of loss and sadness, even grief, will be with us at this final conferring of degrees,” reflected the Reverend Dr. Robert Grove-Markwood, the Seminary’s president. “But even more, there will be appropriate pride, and great joy as we celebrate the academic accomplishments of our most recent graduates, blessing them for service to God and the world. We are profoundly mindful and grateful for our legacy of theological learning and spiritual formation borne by gifted faculty, loyal alumni-alumnae, faithful staff, diligent trustees and generous friends for almost two centuries. We rejoice that this legacy will become incarnate in the ministries of these graduates, and that Bangor Theological Seminary has helped them respond to God’s call in their lives.”

With campuses in Bangor and Portland, Maine, Bangor Theological Seminary is an ecumenical seminary founded in the congregational tradition, and a closely-related seminary of the United Church of Christ. After July 1, Bangor Theological Seminary will become The BTS Center, operating as a nonprofit charitable organization in the state of Maine. While The BTS Center will not offer theological degrees, its mission is an educational venture “to equip and support clergy and laity for theologically grounded and effective 21st century ministries.” For information about The BTS Center, contact Robert Grove-Markwood, executive director, at 207-227-3507, or email bob@thebtscenter.org.
