Audience selects “The Odd Couple, Female Version”to celebrate 20th anniversary

WINTERPORT, Maine – Winterport Open Stage proudly announces the winning show selected by audience members to kick off the 20th season as a community theater group. “The Odd Couple, Female Version” by Neil Simon won the popular vote out of six plays on a paper ballot.

Originally produced by Winterport Open Stage in 1997 and directed by Reed Farrar, the group’s founder, “The Odd Couple, Female Version” will be produced this fall at Samuel L. Wagner Middle School with performance dates to be announced..

The voting took place during each of the six performances of the group’s spring production, “Nunsense” which was attended by more than 600 people. Participation in the voting was part of the fun of the show, with lax audience members being highly encouraged to stay on task by the Nunsense nuns who wandered the aisles during intermission.

Among the six play choices were “Sylvia” and “The Dining Room” by A.R. Gurney, “Black Comedy” by Peter Schaeffer, “Fuddy Meers” by David Lindsay-Abaire, “Inspecting Carol” by Daniel Sullivan and “The Odd Couple, Female Version.” More than 348 ballots were turned in with audience members also expressing an interest in seeing “Nunsense 2” in a future season, which made the “nuns” happy.

“To show our appreciation for the community support over the two decades, the board decided to let the audience pick their favorite show from the past,” explains Jeri Misler, a board member of Winterport Open Stage since moving to Winterport in 2004. Misler, along with all seven board members, serves multiple roles in the company including director, actor, lighting and sound operator, media and marketing person and producer. The group mounts two shows annually on the Wagner Middle School stage located in the historic Winterport village.

“Having an active theatre group in a small town such as Winterport is an impressive achievement. We are especially grateful to Wagner Middle School ‘s staff for their support, ” Misler added while encouraging others interested in theater to become involved.
