American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Maine is delighted to honor Shenna Bellows with the 2013 Achievement Citation Award, which will be presented at the annual AAUW state convention in Belfast on the evening of April 26, 2013.
Ms. Bellows was nominated by the Penobscot Valley Branch of AAUW. She grew up in Hancock County and earned a degree in International Politics and Economics at Middlebury College in Vermont in 1997. Since March 2005 she has served as the Executive Director of the ACLU of Maine.
She is a member of Emerge Maine (Women Leaders for a Democratic Future) Class of 2010. In
2010, she also received the Maryann Hartman award, University of Maine’s Women in the
Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program. This was followed in 2011 by the Mabel Sine
Wadsworth Leadership Torch Award.
Appointments include the Maine Right to Know Advisory Committee (2005-2012) and Board of
Directors, Maine Freedom of Information Coalition (2011-2012). She is also active in the Maine
Immigrants Rights Coalition, the Coalition for Maine Women and the Maine Choice Coalition.
She co-chaired the successful 2011 Protect Maine Voting Rights campaign to preserve same day
voter registration. After seven years on the Executive Committee of the Maine Freedom to
