PORTLAND, Maine — Portland Catholics, allies, and friends gathering to send support and blessings through prayer and song to the Sisters as they make their decision on how to respond to the Vatican’s mandate that they comply to teachings of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Prayer vigils are planned across the country for tomorrow night in 36 cities. Portland is the only Maine city hosting a prayer vigil from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Congress Square Park, next to the Eastland Hotel. The Vigil is sponsored by “Spirit in Support” Portland, Maine.
The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) is holding its annual Assembly August 7-12 in St. Louis. Eighty percent of the 57,000 women religious in the US belong to the LCWR. These religious orders will be sending representatives to the assembly to reflect and discern on how to respond to the Vatican’s mandate that they comply to teachings of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. This is a historic moment in the lives of Catholics. As faithful people we are called to work for justice and mercy – a message that Catholic sisters in this country have taught each of us for decades.
