100th Birthday Celebration

Katharine (Kae) MacKenzie Hill, Bangor resident since 1936, was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. She attended Nursing School at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal (affiliated with McGill University), where she met her future husband, Allison Hill, a resident at the hospital, when he performed an emergency appendectomy for her one Christmas Eve. She became an RN in the Province of Quebec in November 1935.

After marrying, Kae and Al moved to his hometown of Bangor, ME, where she became an American Citizen in 1941. She settled in as a devoted wife and mother of three children. She kept the home fires burning during WWII while Al served overseas, and she remains there to this day, residing at Winterberry Heights, and looking forward to her 100th birthday on March 24.

Kae was a valuable member of the Bangor community for many years. She ran Al’s medical office out of a wing of their home, while performing many volunteer jobs. These included: member of the Eastern Maine General Hospital Auxiliary, Junior League of Bangor, and PEO; officer and Board member of the Penobscot Valley Health Assoc. (PVHA); Board member of The Bangor Humane Society; and Board member of the Phillips Strickland House (senior living facility). In 1991, she received the Louise P. Hopkins Award from PVHA for her high caliber of service.

Kae also had a great interest in the arts, exposing her family to all that was available in Bangor and (reflecting her Canadian heritage), she dearly loved the University of Maine hockey team as an enthusiastic season ticket holder for many years.

Kae remains interested in the community and continues to enjoy taking rides around town and going out to lunch. Kae is blessed with good health, and is an inspiration to her family, Carolyn Rogers of Hebron, Conn., Sally Reed of Bangor, and Ross Hill of New York City. They will be joined by her four grandchildren and four great grandchildren from Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, and Cousin Alison Sweeney from Alpharetta, GA, and her mother, Aunt Barbara Hill from Scarborough, for a birthday lunch at Lucerne Inn–a favorite gathering place for the family over the years.
