AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Rookie Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) had three extra-base hits and four RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 6-4 in the first game of the teams’ doubleheader Wednesday at Lake Myrtle Field. The Huskies went on to sweep Pointers rallying from a 4-0 deficit to take another 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
The sweep improved the Huskies’ overall record to 4-2 with five games remaining on their Florida swing. The Pointers had their three-game winning streak snapped by the double dip, and fell to 4-5 on the season.
The Huskies rallied from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the third, a single marker in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take the nightcap. Five USM relievers combined to pitch eight innings of one-hit shutout baseball.
The Pointers jumped on USM senior starter Tyler Leavitt (North Andover, Mass.) for three runs in the first and a run in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore William Iloncaie (East Roy, Wis.) had a two-run single, and rookie Angel Ramirez(Milwaukee, Wis.) followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 before USM even batted.
A walk to the leadoff man in the second ended Leavitt’s afternoon and brought on senior Alec Tobey (South Berwick, Maine/Berwick Academy). Senior Ben Gerber’s (Stoughton, Wis.) one-out single scored rookie Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill.) to give the Pointers a four-run lead.
USM got three back in the third on senior Matt Bender’s (Walpole, Mass.) fielder’s choice that scored junior Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine), a wild pitch that permitted junior Nick Bowie (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) to score, and Bender scored on a Warren single.
Dexter scored the tying run in the fourth when he scored on a double play.
In the sixth, Dexter came across the plate on a single by sophomore Kyle O’Connor (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) to break the 4-4 tie, and sophomore Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood), who pinch ran for O’Connor, scored an insurance run on a double by Bender.
Tobey, sophomores Ryan Gaydou (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine) , senior Tom Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) and Dexter combined to limit the Pointers to one hit and four walks of the final eight innings. Fortier got his first win with the Huskies, and Dexter earned his second save.
Warren, Heath, Dexter and junior Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) had two hits apiece for the Huskies. Senior right-hander Derek Kawlewski (Stevens Point, Wis.) took the loss for UWSP giving up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and a walk in 6.1 innings.
