BRUNSWICK, Maine – Drake Byrd‘s first collegiate goal with 29 minutes remaining gave the Bowdoin College men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Williams on Sunday at Pickard Field.
The Polar Bears win their third-straight contest overall and improve to 4-1-0 (2-1-0 NESCAC). The Ephs suffer their first loss of the campaign and drop to 3-1-0 (2-1-0 NESCAC).
The teams played an evenly-matched first half with both sides taking two shots apiece. The best chance for either squad came from Bowdoin in the 38th minute when Will Herman‘s header attempt sailed wide of the goal off a nifty cross from Matty McColl.
Byrd cashed in for Bowdoin just moments after checking into the contest as McColl controlled the ball through the midfield and rifled a perfectly-placed shot towards the net than drifted just beyond the reach of Williams netminder Bobby Schneiderman. The ball rang off the post, but caromed right to the feet of Byrd, who settled and deposited his first career goal with 29:01 remaining.
Bowdoin made a bid to double their lead later in the half as Jason Oliver had an open look with eight minutes left, but Schneiderman made a diving stop to maintain the one-goal deficit for Williams.
The best opportunity for the Ephs to tie the contest came with under five minutes to play as Bobby Fabricant ripped a shot from the left side of the box that curled towards the net, skipping off the top of the crossbar and out of bounds.
