LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates men’s soccer team struggled to get anything going on offense in a 2-0 loss to Williams Sunday afternoon at Russell Street Field.
The Bobcats (3-3-2, 1-3-1) were out-shot by the Ephs (6-1-1, 3-1) 14-8 in the match and Bates only recorded one shot on goal.
Sophomore Robbie Montanaro (Belmont, Mass.) made eight saves in goal for the Bobcats on the afternoon.
In the fifth minute, the Ephs’ J.C. Bahr de Stefano got off the first shot of the match, missing high over the crossbar.
Neither team got a shot off again until the 15th minute, when Mohammed Rashid took two shots, one that missed wide right and one that got stopped by Montanaro.
At the 16-minute mark, the Bobcats’ Matt DiVite ’17 (Murray Hill, N.J.) recorded the first shot of the match for Bates, but it missed wide.
But in the 17th minute, Malcolm Moutenot weaved through the Bates defense and scored his first goal of the seaosn to put Williams up 1-0.
In the 29th minute, first-year Eric Opoku (Accra, Ghana) tallied a strong shot towards the left side of the net but Williams keeper Christian Alcorn stopped the shot with his chest to prevent the Bobcats from getting the equalizer.
Bates trailed 1-0 at the half and in the second half the Ephs wasted no time getting an insurance goal when Mark Sisco-Tolomeo tallied his third goal of the season just one minute and 47 seconds into the half.
In the 57th minute, junior backer Max Watson (Yarmouth, Maine) delivered a nice header that just missed high of the goal off a set piece.
Bates had a couple chances late but Williams blocked a pair of shot attempts in the 82nd and the 87th minute respectively.
