BANGOR, ME – The Husson men’s lacrosse team won their home opener against Wheelock, 13-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Boucher Field. Their seven goal second period propelled the Eagles to their first victory of the 2017 season.
The Eagles scored early and often against the Wildcats. Connor Murray netted the first of four first period goals at 13:17. Matt Verrill was credited with the assist. Four minutes later, Blake Campbell found the back of the net with help from Zach Glazier. At 9:15, Keenan Brown of Wheelock earned a 1:00 minute penalty by slashing a Husson defenseman. Jacob Boothby took full advantage of the extra-man opporunity and sniped a goal by the Wheelock goaltender. Zach Glazier would add the fourth goal of the period at 7:46. It was his third point of the opening frame.
Jacob Boothby, Matt Verrill, Brooks Gay, Adam Littlefield, and Blaine Miller all recorded goals in the second period. Matt Verrill and Jacob Boothby each, respectively, scored twice. Matt Martin stood on his head in the first half and allowed zero goals from the Wheelock attackers. The Eagles led 11-0 at the half.
Husson and Wheelock played an even third period. Both teams scored two goals. 13-2 was the score after three periods of play. The Wildcats won the fourth period, 3-0. Keenan Brown, Luke McKinnon, and Jared Trainor were the goal scorers in the final frame. Even though they only scored two goals in the second half, Husson went on to win their first game of the 2017 campaign, 13-5.
Jacob Boothby led the way for Husson. He scored five goals and dished out one assist. Zach Glazier tallied five points on the afternoon by scoring one goal and assisting on four goals. Brooks Gay and Matt Verrill each racked up four points in the victory. Matt Martin saved 11 of 16 shots faced in his first win of the season.
Noah Horning paced the Wildcats with one goal and one assist. Jared Trainor, Keenan Brown, Luke McKinnon, and Josh Simmons each tossed in one goal for Wheelock in the loss.
