BRUNSWICK, Maine – Ethan Ellsworth scored two minutes into the game to lift the Bowdoin men’s soccer team to a 1-0 NESCAC victory over visiting Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (3-1-0, 1-1-0 NESCAC) picked up their first conference win of the season, while posting their third shutout. The Cardinals (3-1-0, 0-1-0 NESCAC) suffered their first setback of the year.
Levi Morant crossed the ball to Ellsworth at the top of the box. Ellsworth launched a shot over the
defense that curled just inside the post to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead just 2:13 into the game
In the 19th minute, a Bowdoin foul just outside the box gave the Cardinals a promising free kick. Sam Serxner connected with Cameron Park who fired the ball on net. Stevie Van Siclen dove to deny the bid and preserve the lead.
Early in the second half, Moctar Niang missed the net with a shot the snaked wide left.
Niang set up Will Herman with a back heal pass, but this time Herman’s bid soared over the crossbar.
In the final minute of action, James Schubauer nearly put back a rebound to extend the game, but again Van Siclen turned the shot away.
Wesleyan held a slight 9-7 edge in shots and 2-0 corner kick advantage.
Van Siclen ended the day with five saves.
Brian Harnett played the first half and allowed one goal. Chris Franklin played the final 45 minutes and recorded a pair of saves.
