Washington Academy Football 22 at Stearns 28

By Brian Brown, Special to the BDN

At Millinocket on Friday night, junior Marc Morneault ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns on 42 carries to spark the Stearns offense and on defense intercepted a pass in the waning minutes of the contest to help seal the first victory of the season for the Minutemen.

Stearns scored the first 20 points of the night on touchdown runs of 4 and 5 yards by Morneault to go along with a 66-yard touchdown pass from junior Damean Newbury to junior Dylan Kruger. Morneault converted two of three extra point attempts as the Minutemen built a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Washington Academy pulled within 20-15 at halftime on two touchdowns in the final 2:11 of the second quarter. A 5-yard run by senior Kyle Gallaher and ensuing extra point by senior Micah McBrine made it 20-7 before McBrine connected with junior Austin Seavey on an 11-yard touchdown pass following a Stearns fumble. McBrine connected with senior Fred McLean on the two-point conversion try after a botched snap on the kick attempt as Washington Academy cut its deficit to five.

The two sides were scoreless in the third quarter before the Minutemen extended their lead midway through the fourth on Morneault’s third touchdown of the game. He found the end zone from 2 yards out and then added the two-point conversion to give the Minutemen a 28-15 edge with 5:49 remaining.

Washington Academy answered a minute later when junior Ellic Smith scored on a 14-yard run. McBrine’s extra point made it 28-22 with 4:49 left to play.

Stearns recovered an onside kick and picked up one first down on its ensuing drive before turning the ball over on downs on fourth-and-three at the Raiders 30-yard line with 1:21 remaining in the fourth.

Morneault then sealed the victory by picking off McBrine’s pass on the first snap of the Raiders ensuing possession as Stearns held on for the six-point win.
