Vermont Women's College Hockey 2 at Maine 0

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

ORONO, Maine – Carly Jackson earned her second shutout of the season as the Black Bears cruised to a 2-0 victory over the University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon at the Alfond Arena.

Maine (11-6-2, 5-3-1 WHEA) fended off the Catamounts (5-11-2, 7-3-1 WHEA) from their defensive end, only allowing 17 shots to squeeze through to Jackson while blocking 11 in their path to net. Offensively, the Black Bears posted a strong performance controlling the puck in Catamount territory as Sydney Scobee posted 30 saves in between the posts.

Tereza Vanisova kicked off the action registering her eighth goal of the season following up on her own rebound. Her reflex response was too quick for Vermont to stop, as she tucked in a bouncing puck with 6:49 on the clock in the opening frame. This is the fourth game in a row Maine has struck first seizing a 1-0 lead. Jessica Jacques and Brooke Stacey aided the play with assists.

Breaking open the second period, the Black Bears found the advantage of a fairly open net after Scobee was tripped up in a scuffle on the crease. Struggling to return to a standing position as the puck rotated around the back of the net, she made a strong effort to throw her stick out in an attempt to get a piece of the shot, but Anna Zikova put enough momentum on the puck to glide over the line, giving Maine a 2-0 lead. Assists were given to Stacey for her second of the game and Vanisova for her 20th this season.

Both teams saw minimal scoring opportunities in the final 20 minutes as Vermont outshot Maine 8-6. Despite having the advantage of two power plays in the third period and pulling Scobee from net with 59 seconds to go, the Catamounts struggled to capitalize any shots.

The Catamounts will stick around for another matchup against the Black Bears tomorrow, December 3rd. Puck is set to drop at 2 p.m.
